History

The Preventing Suicide Network (PSN) has been in development since 2001 with support from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) of the National Institute of Health (NIH) under SBIR Contract # N44MH22044.

Our earliest design activities for the PSN included:

  • Reviewing existing suicide prevention resources, including books, articles, media and other Web sites
  • Evaluating gaps in the current provision of resources for suicide prevention
  • Determining how to best serve our intended audience
  • Outlining the necessary features and characteristics for a national suicide prevention Web site

Following a review of our design activities, funding for the first half of Phase 2 of the project, building a working prototype of the site, was awarded by the NIMH in Fall 2002. Our building activities since Fall 2002 have included:

  • Conducting interviews about needed Web site features with potential users
  • Revising earlier designs based on that feedback
  • Writing and organizing content
  • Locating and organizing additional resources including books, articles, media and other Web sites
  • Creating the prototype site
  • Testing the prototype site

You are a visitor at this site as a result of these early efforts. The Preventing Suicide Network team looks forward to fulfilling its goal of building a fully functional Web that meets the following goal:

To provide helpers, those persons who are concerned about someone who might be suicidal, with an online community dedicated to timely access to authoritative and problem-specific information tailored toward their unique contribution in preventing suicide.
