Facilities Title

There are different kinds of treatment facilities for individuals who are having suicidal thoughts or are currently suicidal.   Community mental health centers, inpatient treatment facilities, and hospitals are places where people can receive treatment to help prevent them from taking their lives by suicide.

  • Community Mental Health Centers

Community Mental Health Centers provide services to meet the mental health needs (including persons who are suicidal or at risk for suicide) of residents in a specific geographical area. Community service agencies are often sponsored by government, church, or other private sector funding.

  • Inpatient Treatment Facilities

Inpatient treatment facilities offer persons who are suicidal a safe and therapeutic setting, one in which mental health clinicians can monitor and assist them during the most critical time of a suicide attempt.

  • Hospitals

Some of the best places to seek help are local hospitals with 24-hour emergency departments. Hospitals can also provide information about additional effective treatment options within your local area.

These are not the only treatment facility options available to help treat people with suicidal thoughts and actions, but can help you to access the best options for the treatment needs of an individual available within your local area.

Electronic, print, and multimedia resources are provided to help you to find additional authoritative information on facilities for the treatment of suicidal thoughts or behaviors. These resources are available from such national organizations as The National Institute of Mental Health as well as professional organizations, not-for-profit organizations, and educational institutions.

If you are unable to find treatment assistance in your area, contact a local crisis hotline by looking up “crisis hotline” in your yellow pages or call: 1-800-SUICIDE, your physician, or a local hospital's emergency department. Any of these resources will be able to refer you to the nearest treatment facility.
