What education is available for a Family Member

Introduction

Educational resources are available for individuals who are members of a family unit and interested in finding information on suicide and suicide prevention.

Education is available in the form of for example, a book, pamphlet, course, online tool, or institution.   These resources offer a family member the ability to be informed on the topic of suicide and suicide prevention, the ability to advocate for the individual needs of a family member in need of help, and the ability to encourage protective factors within the family unit.

Protective factors are the things that reduce the potential for suicide and suicidal behaviors.   A few examples of protective factors are:

  • Effective and consistent clinical care for mental, physical, and substance use disorders
  • Support for help-seeking behaviors
  • Restricted access to highly lethal methods of suicide
  • Strong connections to family and community support
  • Learned skills in problem solving, conflict resolution, and nonviolent handling of disputes

Your family role could be as a parent, younger child, adult child, sister, brother, guardian, aunt, uncle, grandparent, cousin, etc. or you may hold more than one role within your family.

Every person within a family not only plays a role defined by their age or relation but also defined by how the family interacts, lives, communicates, and behaves.   These different roles require diverse educational resources and the ability to access these resources quickly.   This Web site can help you find the educational suicide prevention resources that you want.
