Consequently, geriatric specialists hold many roles and have diverse opportunities for working with older adults who are actively suicidal, contemplating suicide, having suicidal thoughts, as well as working with older adults who may be showing the first signs or traits of a mental health disorder.

The QPR Institute is a private sector Web site offering comprehensive suicide prevention training programs and educational and clinical materials for the general public, professionals, and institutions. QPR stands for Question, Persuade and Refer which provides the foundation for their “gatekeeper” training program. Aimed at teachers, firefighters, church members, professionals and the public in general, QPR is dedicated to education that works to prevent suicide.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP)
The AFSP is dedicated to supporting research projects that help further the understanding and treatment of depression and the prevention of suicide. The AFSP supports research that provides information and education about depression and suicide, promotes professional education for the recognition and treatment of depressed and suicidal individuals, publicizes the breadth of the problems associated with depression and suicide, publicizes the need for research, prevention and treatment, and supports programs for suicide survivor treatment, research and education.
