American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP)

 

The AAGP is a national association representing and serving its members and the field of geriatric psychiatry. AAGP is dedicated to promoting the mental health and well being of older people and improving the care of people with late-life mental disorders.

Administration on Aging (AoA)

 

The AoA is an agency in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and is one of the nation's largest providers of home- and community-based care for older persons and their caregivers. AoA's mission is to promote the dignity and independence of older people and to help society prepare for an aging population.

National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (NSSP)

 

The NSSP is a collaborative effort of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the National Institutes of Health, Health Resources and Services Administration, and the Indian Health Service.   The NSSP lays out a framework for action to prevent suicide and guides development of a variety of services and programs to be developed. The NSSP is designed to be a catalyst for social change with the power to transform attitudes, policies, and services

1999 Surgeon General's Report

 

On July 28, 1999, Surgeon General David Satcher presented a comprehensive plan to prevent suicide in the United States. The document is entitled The Surgeon General's Call To Action To Prevent Suicide and outlines more than a dozen steps that can be taken by individuals, communities, organizations, and policymakers to prevent suicide in the U.S.   This report marked a great advance in the pursuit of suicide prevention efforts and awareness in the U.S.
