Introduction

There are many resources that are specific to Media personnel that do not fit into any one specific category.   Members of the media will find additional suicide prevention resources from diverse and numerous reputable sources provided to support and encourage accurate and effective reporting in an effort to educate and prevent suicide.

Below you will find learning tools like publications and organizations that contain information specific to a member of the media's needs or that can be accessed for additional resources that will provide you with the information that you seek.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP)

 

The AFSP is dedicated to supporting research projects that help further the understanding and treatment of depression and the prevention of suicide.   AFSP supports research that provides information and education about depression and suicide, promotes professional education for the recognition and treatment of depressed and suicidal individuals, publicizes the magnitude of the problems of depression and suicide and the need for research, prevention and treatment, and supports programs for suicide survivor treatment, research and education.

American Association of Suicidology (AAS)

 

The AAS is a not for profit organization dedicated to the understanding and prevention of suicide. The Web site is designed as a resource for anyone concerned about suicide, including AAS members, suicide researchers, therapists, prevention specialists, survivors of suicide, and people who are themselves in crisis.  

 

The AAS provides media guidelines for reporting on suicide as well as the resources to speak directly to an expert for accurate information on suicide.   These AAS resources are available at the following Web address:

The Kristin Brooks Hope Center

 

A survivor of suicide developed The Kristin Brooks Hope Center in 1999 to offer hope and resources to individuals in need.   Former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher dedicated this national crisis hotline network in May 1999. The hotline connects people who are depressed or suicidal, or people who are concerned about someone they love to a Contact USA or AAS certified crisis center.
