| Introduction | ||
|
Members of the military can make a difference in the lives of the men, women, and families around them. Learn about suicide, how suicide can impact the military, and take action.
The Facts The military has launched a year long joint campaign (2002-2003), of the Army, Navy and Air Force that is aimed at reducing suicides in the military. The Air Force has had the most aggressive and successful program, requiring personnel at all levels to undergo training on recognition of potential suicide signs and what to do. They have reduced their suicide rate to 5.6 per 100,000 with these training programs AND placed an emphasis on seeking behavioral health treatment if needed. It is up to the leadership to insure that military members receive mental health treatment without impacting their careers or facing retribution in their units (Reference 2).
Military persons are especially susceptible to risk factors for suicide due to frequent deployments, frequent moves, retirement or loss of military careers. The good news is that with the proper attention and appropriate referral to the military healthcare system, suicide CAN BE PREVENTED.
