Treatment Resources

There are a variety of treatment options for people with suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors because all people are different and because there is not one way that researchers have found to be the most effective or beneficial when treating people for suicidal thoughts and actions.   Resources are provided to help you to find professional help and locate additional information about treatment resources.

The treatment of suicidal thoughts and actions requires that people seek help from individuals who are trained in providing health care services. The health care professional can in turn determine the needs of the person and apply the appropriate tools and plans to best help that individual.

What to do in an emergency

There are specific actions that can help in a crisis situation.   Understanding what to do can minimize stress and maximize the best approaches for interacting with people who may be suicidal.

Suicide Hotlines
Find Web sites that provide access to suicide hotlines around the world, nationally, and locally.

Facilities

Find information on accessing local mental and physical health resources that provide care for suicidal individuals.  These health provider facilities include:

  • Crisis or Suicide Hotlines
  • Community Mental Health Centers
  • Mental Health Clinicians
  • Inpatient Treatment Facilities
  • General Health Care Facilities

Mental health providers
Find Web sites that provide access to mental health providers who offer care for persons at risk for suicide.   These Web sites are often organized according to specialty or the mental health clinician's professional affiliations.

Legal and ethical considerations
Legal and ethical issues are present when individuals interact and work with people who may harm themselves.   Understanding the consequences of these actions or non-actions is important.

Standard treatments

There are no authoritative standards for treating persons who may be suicidal, but there are general standards universally used to help guide treatment choices.   To ensure that persons at risk for suicide get the care that they require, individuals must be knowledgeable about best practices.

Medication can be an important part of treatment for a suicidal or clinically depressed person.   For more information, access Medication information.
